Tiers at a Glance
The tiers are based on curation criteria, scarcity of the cultivar, terpene profile, structure of the cured flower, and the documentation we have on the batch. They are not strictly potency tiers. We rotate inventory roughly every two weeks, so the strains in each tier change with the rotation.
Why We Sort Flower This Way
When a regular walks in and asks “what’s good this week,” tier is the first cut. Rare, Exotic, or Ultra orients the conversation toward what kind of jar we’re going to open first. A first-time customer who wants to start with something approachable, we start in Rare. A returning customer who came specifically for a rotation drop they heard about, we walk them through Ultra. The tier isn’t a price gate; it’s a sorting tool.
The reason this matters: the in-person evaluation, see, smell, ask questions, is the actual differentiator at our shop. The tier system is how we organize that evaluation. Without it, the counter conversation would either be “tell me what you want and I’ll bring something” or “here’s the whole menu, good luck.” Neither works well for premium hemp-derived flower, where the meaningful differences between batches are not captured by a number on a label.
There is a perception problem in this category that the alternative to a dispensary is a low-quality product, sometimes called “gas station weed.” Our tier system is partly a response to that. Every jar at every tier, Rare, Exotic, or Ultra, is curated, traced, and opened at the counter. We can show you what you’re buying before you buy it.
How to Evaluate a Jar at Our Counter
You don’t need to know what tier something is in to evaluate it. The evaluation method is the same across all three. The team at the counter will walk through any of this with you. Asking questions is normal here. So is changing your mind after smelling a different jar.
- Look at the color. Healthy cured flower has clear, distinct color. The exact color varies by strain, some lean deep green, some have heavy purple, some carry orange or amber pistils, but the color should be saturated, not faded or grayish. Faded color usually means the flower has been sitting too long.
- Check the structure. Flower should hold its shape without being either bone-dry-crumbly or moist-spongy. The right texture has a slight give when you press it lightly. Buds that powder when touched are over-dry. Buds that compress and stay compressed are under-cured.
- Trichome coverage. The frosty crystalline layer on the surface is trichomes, the resin glands. Heavy, even trichome coverage usually correlates with quality across tiers. A jar with sparse trichome coverage at any tier is worth asking about; sometimes it's a leaner phenotype of a known strain, sometimes it's just a weaker batch.
- Smell. Open the jar and inhale once. Don't go deep on the first sniff. The terpene profile is where strains genuinely distinguish themselves. Some pop with citrus, some lean into earth and fuel, some go floral or sweet. If a jar smells flat or hay-like, the terpenes have degraded.
Rare
Rare is where we put approachable, well-curated flower that doesn’t have the scarcity or batch-level rarity of the higher tiers. It is not “the cheap shelf.” A Rare-tier flower can still smell beautifully, look great in the jar, and perform well depending on the strain. Often this is the tier where we put our consistent, reliable cultivars, strains we know perform and that we can usually keep stocked through a rotation cycle.
For a first-time customer at Big Chiefs Kush, Rare is usually where the conversation starts. The price point is friendlier and the experience is forgiving if you’re still figuring out what you like.
Exotic
Exotic is the middle tier and probably our broadest. This is where most of our rotating selection lives. Strains move into Exotic when they have a more distinct terpene profile, a more interesting lineage, or a batch that came in with notably better trichome density and structure than the Rare-tier average.
A lot of our customers do most of their buying out of Exotic. It’s the tier that rotates the fastest, which means the selection is freshest, and it carries enough range that you can find something familiar or something brand-new depending on what’s on the counter that week.
Ultra
Ultra is the top tier. We put strains here for one or more of: genuine cultivar rarity, exceptional batch quality, complex or distinctive terpene profiles, or documented lineage from a producer whose work consistently performs. Ultra-tier strains often have shorter availability windows; a strain that hits Ultra on one batch may not return in that tier on the next harvest cycle.
Ultra is not automatically the strongest. Strength varies cultivar to cultivar regardless of tier. What Ultra signals is that the team has flagged this jar as the most worth your attention on the counter that week, on criteria beyond raw cannabinoid numbers.
How Tiers Shift Every Two Weeks
Our flower inventory rotates roughly every two weeks across both locations. New batches arrive, old batches sell through, and the tier composition shifts with the new stock. A strain that was in Exotic last cycle might move to Ultra if a new batch came in noticeably better, or drop to Rare if the new batch is solid but unremarkable.

Can I see and smell every tier before I buy?
Yes. Every jar on the counter at both Kansas City locations is opened for customers who ask. Rare, Exotic, and Ultra are evaluated the same way: look at color and structure, check trichome coverage, smell the terpene profile. None of this requires you to commit to a purchase before you’ve evaluated.
